6 September 2012 Steve Nash, currently After Sales Director of BMW, will be joining the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) as CEO in January 2013.

Automotive retailers run open-door events to attract new young recruits

The automotive industry has today launched Discover Automotive Retail, a scheme that will see young people get the chance to experience the diverse variety of careers and apprenticeships available in the UK's £146* billion a year automotive retail sector. The industry initiative will go live in November and has been co-ordinated by industry body the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) in partnership with the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) and the industry's Sector Skills Council - the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI)

Friday 1 June saw around 1000 students from across England and Wales attend the FIA European Drag Racing Championship event at Santa Pod in Northamptonshire, as part of the first Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) Youth Day. As one of Santa Pod's most prestigious drag race meetings 'The Main Event' is a hugely popular, televised extravaganza and the first practise round of the FIA season which features over 200 teams and 17 classes of cars and bikes

Cardiff and Vale College have passed the first Senior Mechanical, Electrical and Trim (MET) Technician in the UK using the new ATA re-accreditation Assessed Outcome Module (AOM) option. 41 year-old Rob Edwards travelled 270 miles and around five hours to get to the College from Norwich in the county of Norfolk to sit his re-accreditation

Students at Cardiff and Vale College have won all three SkillAuto Wales Regional Heats that took place last week at the College's Automotive Academy. 18 year-old Matthew Bailey, 22 year-old Daniel Coles and 23 year-old Rhys Morris won the Body Repair, Paint Refinishing and Light Vehicle Repair competitions respectively

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has launched Indicate, a set of motoring themed, free teaching resource that schools can use to deliver the Key Stage 3 maths curriculum and introduce students to the motor industry. ATA Vehicle Inspection Technician Approved by VOSA as Prerequisite MOT Route

Apprenticeships to run for a minimum of 12 months

Businesses that employ young apprentices will be required to run schemes for a minimum of 12 months under new rules unveiled by the Government. Apprenticeships for those aged 19 and over should now run for between one and four years, while those being taken by 16 to 18 year olds will be required to last for a minimum of one year
