Junior Employability Event - Cardiff

Over 50 students attended an Employability Event which was hosted by four sector skills councils at the Cardiff University Conference Hall in September.

Students took part in a number of activities which highlighted the skills and qualifications required to work in the high tech automotive industry of today.

The Automotive Skills division of the IMI were supported by Fordthorne of Cardiff who kindly provided a selection of vehicles. The students were able to explore some of the ingenious technology features fitted as standard to many of today's vehicles for safety, comfort and the driving experience.

Each of the groups were required to match the various features of the different vehicles to potential customer profiles, then, through role play, they each made their recommendations as to the choice of vehicle to the customer.

Skillscompetition Wales has been introduced to support and raise the profile of skills competitions within Wales. It will do so by promoting excellence amongst skilled trainees and apprentices across Wales. High skill levels are vital to the success of the Welsh economy and are a key part of the Welsh Assembly Government's strategy to help businesses to grow, develop and compete profitably.

Competitions are about finding the 'best of the best' and the competitive nature of humankind means that certain talented individuals will always strive to develop their skills in an effort to beat the opposition. Competitions are designed to test individuals against standards for work, now and in the future. For the individual, the rewards can be fantastically self satisfying. For employers, highly adept employees contribute to the success and profitability of the company.
