Case Studies

Below are three case studies of actual experiences on an Young Apprenticeship scheme.

Adam's story ...

Joe's story ...

Laura's story ...

Can I do the Young Apprenticeship programme as well as optional GCSEs?

You will continue with your Core Curriculum and may be able to continue with any optional subjects you have chosen. This will depend on your timetable and the number of optional GCSEs you want to do as well as what days your school have arranged for you to do the Young Apprenticeship programme.  If there are clashes in your timetable, you may need to drop optional subjects to fit in with the Young Apprenticeship programme. You will also need to think about the work you will be doing. Can you manage the Young Apprenticeship programme, core curriculum and additional subjects?

What vocational qualification will I be doing?

You will be working towards a level 2 vocational qualification in one of these areas, Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, Vehicle Fitting Operations, Vehicle Parts Operations or Vehicle Service & Technology. You may also do additional, smaller qualifications; this will depend on what is on offer from the provider over the course of the Young Apprenticeship programme.

When will I start work experience?

In the majority of cases, you will be at College or with the training provider for at least one term before going out into your work placement. This time will be spent getting you ready for the work experience and making sure, you have a good understanding of Health & Safety in the motor industry. You may also get involved in other activities linked to the motor industry.

Where will my work experience be?

Where possible, your work experience will be local to where you live or go to school.  Your placement will have a direct link with the motor industry. This could mean that you are placed with a dealership that sells, services, repairs and MOT a variety of vehicles. You could also go to independent garages that service and repair cars. You could play a part in this by finding your own placement.

What will I be doing on work experience?

When you go on work experience, you will more than likely work in a garage where cars are sold and maintained. These are called dealerships and they form the largest part of the automotive industry. You will be working on cars that have come in for a service or to be repaired. You may be assisting in MOTs. Whilst you are with this business, you may also work in the different departments to find out how the business works and is organised. The bigger dealerships employ different people to do a variety of different jobs.
