My IMI membership

The IMI provides a range of membership grades. Each grade demonstrates a member's qualifications and experience in the retail motor industry. Displaying the post-nominal letters after your name on your business card, CV, website and marketing materials helps customers, colleagues and potential employers understand that you are an able and ethical professional who takes their career seriously.

Levels of Membership

There are 5 levels of IMI membership, which are shown below. Your grade is determined on both your experience AND your level of qualifications.  Each application is circulated to our Professional Standards and Grading Committee for review and confirmation of the level of membership awarded to you.  Please ensure that you provide us with copies of your highest qualifications in order to ensure that you are elected in at the correct level.

Membership applications are subject to a £15 application fee which will be taken at the end of the membership application, and a £10 election fee which will be added on to your initial invoice with your new member pack.  The membership year runs from 1 April to 31 March. 

The application process takes 28 days from receipt of your certificates. If you do not send certificates in support of your application, you will be elected in as an Affiliate of the Institute (AffIMI) after 28 days.

Fellow (FIMI)

£102  - Level 5 national qualification or equivalent and 5 years experience in senior management of which at least 2 years must be in the motor industry.

Member (MIMI)

£68.80 - Level 4 national qualification or equivalent and 3 years relevant middle management experience, of which at least 2 years must be in the motor industry.

Associate (AMIMI)

£57.20 - Level 3 national qualification or equivalent and 3 years experience in the motor industry

Licentiate (LIMI)

 £47.40 - Level 2 national qualification or equivalent and 12 months experience in the motor industry

Affiliate (AffIMI)

£41.60 - Affiliate membership of the IMI is for individuals interested or working in the motor industry who do not yet qualify for a full membership grade.  You can apply to upgrade your membership status as your career, qualifications and experience develops. 

Engineering Awards

IMI members can also apply for additional automotive specific engineering awards which recognise technical qualifications and experience:

• Advanced Automotive Engineer (AAE)
• Certificated Automotive Engineer (CAE)
