
There are 4 grades of IMI membership. Successful applicants must have the following
FELLOW (FIMI)
Level 5 equivalent national qualification (e.g. Diploma of Management Studies, MBA or equivalent) and 5 years experience in senior management, of which at least two years must be in the retail motor industry. (£102.00 2009/2010 annual fee)
MEMBER (MIMI)
Level 4 equivalent national qualification (e.g. Certificate of Management Studies, BTEC HND, N/SVQ Level 4 or equivalent) and 3 years relevant experience, of which at least two years must be in the retail motor industry. (£68.80 2009/2010 annual fee)
ASSOCIATE (AMIMI)
Level 3 equivalent national qualification (e.g. N/SVQ Level 3 or equivalent) and 3 years experience in the retail motor industry. (£57.20 2009/2010 annual fee)
LICENTIATE (LIMI)
Level 2 equivalent national qualification (e.g. N/SVQ Level 2 or equivalent) and 12 months experience in the retail motor industry. (£47.40 2009/2010 annual fee)
In addition, individuals who do not qualify for membership can choose to be affiliated to the Institute and the following definition applies:
AFFILIATE (AffIMI)
You can become an Affiliate of the IMI and still receive many of the benefits of membership, even if you do not yet qualify for a membership grade (e.g. IMI Student). (£41.60 2009/2010 annual fee)
Reduced membership fees apply for Under 25's
Age up to and including 20 £20.00
Age 21 and 22 £28.40
Age 23 and 24 £34.60

Assessment for FIMI/MIMI Grading
During initial processing of your membership application, we may identify that you should be eligible for a higher grade of membership than your qualifications permit, in which case we will invite you to undertake an assessment, at an additional cost. For more details click here.
Additional automotive engineering awards
For technicians only, there are two special IMI awards recognising technical qualifications and experience:
Advanced Automotive Engineer (AAE) – for master technicians
Certificated Automotive Engineer (CAE) – for qualified vehicle technicians
