Update your management skills and knowledge with these short courses from Henry Ford College

The IMI has formed a partnership with the Henry Ford College, to offer four practical management short courses, that will benefit your business and help your professional development. The Henry Ford College are unique in the industry by offering university qualifications as well as short course programmes.

Delivered by experienced tutors, who have extensive knowledge of the automotive retail environment, these flexible programmes are offered at a special price of £350 (+ VAT) per course to IMI members. Your attendance on one of these courses will complete your IMI CPD requirement and entitle you to a Certificate of CPD Achievement, at your next review date.

These short courses form part of a wider curriculum, aligned with new industry management standards, which are shortly to be announced by Automotive Skills Ltd, the new sector skills council for the motor Industry. In addition, Henry Ford College is part of Loughborough University, and these programmes can form part of a University qualification.

Each course is two days in duration and will take place at the Henry Ford College, on the edge of the Loughborough University campus.

Financial Skills for Non Financial Managers

This course will help to demystify finance and is an important introduction to the language of business finance for non-accountants.

Module Content

On completion of this course you will have increased your knowledge and understanding of finance including why profit is so important and how it is made, what the Manager's role is in improving profitability and where businesses get their money from.

In addition to the above you will also be able to:

  • Prepare and manage a budget
  • Analyse and interpret accounts
  • Confidently use quick financial calculations
  • Control and reduce costs without degrading performance and control cash flow

An Introduction to Product and Consumer Law

This course will help you to develop and awareness of consumer law, the way it governs the sale of goods and services, and how it affects the retail motor industry.

Module Content

On completion of this course you will have increased your knowledge and understanding of the legislation that directly affects you and your organisation. The course will provide you with an introduction to key legislation such as the Consumer Protection Act (1987), Sales and Supply of Goods Act (1994), Price Marking Order (1991), Road Traffic Act (1991) and Consumer Credit Act (1974).

In addition to the above you will also be able to:

  • Identify the key features of a legally binding contract
  • Handle customer complaints professionally, minimising the risk of contravening relevant legislation
  • Distinguish situations where anti-competitive trade practices occur.

Recruiting the Right People

This course will provide you with practical guidance for developing new approaches to ensure you attract and select the most suitable people for your organisation

Module Content

On completion of this course you will have increased your knowledge and understanding of the alternative approaches to recruitment, the laws affecting recruitment and selection, what constitutes a contract of employment and the laws relating to discrimination and diversity.

In addition to the above you will also be able to:

  • Develop a person specification
  • Use various tests and other selection tools
  • Develop interview and questioning techniques
  • Use different types of media to attract the right people
  • Recognise different behaviour types

Understanding the HR Law and Discipline Process

This course will provide you with an overview of the important elements of employment law and an appreciation of how to tackle issues within your organisation. It will also enable you to understand the legal requirements of the disciplinary process and the dangers of non-compliance.

Module Content

On completion of this course you will have increased your knowledge and understanding of the laws affecting recruitment and selection, what constitutes a contract of employment, the laws relating to discrimination, the laws regarding redundancy and the implications of the new regulation relating to family friendly rights.

In addition to the above you will also be able to:

  • Form contracts of employment
  • Use correct discipline and grievance procedures
  • Manage poor performers and poor behaviour and conduct
  • Deal with specific issues effectively
  • Handle gross misconduct issues and carry out effective misconduct investigations
  • Set realistic performance targets and review dates
