The IMI focus on sector specific engineering awards
The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has carried out a strategic review and evaluation of its range of automotive specific products and services. Following this review, the Group Board has called for the IMI to focus on development of sector specific engineering awards in addition to its successful Automotive Technician Accreditation scheme (ATA).
The IMI's decision to focus on further development of a current competency model for qualifications and accreditation which requires individuals to continually update their skills and knowledge with regular testing to ensure they meet the changing national occupational standards means that, by mutual agreement with the Engineering Council, it will cease accepting new EngTech and IEng applications for registration with immediate effect.
The IMI's decision to move away from being an Engineering Council licensed institution was given significant consideration at every level throughout the organisation. Whilst we accept that our decision may inconvenience a small minority of our members, we firmly believe that our organisational focus should be directed towards continued development of current competency frameworks which we believe are more relevant to our members and which will help deliver the IMI's mission of improving the standards and professional competence of those engaged in the retail automotive sector.
