Motorcycle dealers 'see 4% boost'

Sales in the motorcycle market increased by four per cent in October, those involved in the retail motor industry may be interested to know.

There were 11,408 powered two wheelers registered last month, compared to 10,972 at the same time in 2007, the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) reports.

In total, there have been 125,494 sales since the beginning of the year - which is a 1.5 per cent decrease from the figure twelve months ago.

The organisation's acting chief executive Steve Kenward claims the results show a resilience in the sector which restates its importance to the market.

While recognising the fact the motorcycle industry is suffering during the economic downturn, he suggests more people are looking to this type of vehicle as the credit crunch continues.

"As people look for ways to reduce the costs and hassles of travel, they are realising that motorcycles are an efficient, low-cost option," Mr Kenward says.

In a report earlier this month by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the month's new car sales were found to have been 23 per cent lower than last year's.
