A politician in Lincolnshire has been recognised for his efforts to boost road safety across the north-west English region.
Lincoln MP Karl McCartney was honoured with the Road Safety Parliamentarian of the Month Award for his campaign to introduce tougher sanctions on people who get behind the wheel while uninsured.
The prize was handed out by Brake and Direct Line and recognises a campaign which Mr McCartney first pursued back in October 2011.
Back then, the Lincoln MP asked a question during parliament about the average fine for someone driving while uninsured, and discovered the answer was just £200.
Mr McCartney acknowledged: "For far too long, politicians have turned a blind eye towards the issue of dealing with uninsured drivers, even though it undermines confidence in the justice system and penalises the law-abiding."
A recent study carried out by the Motor Insurers' Bureau found that four per cent of all vehicles in the UK are currently uninsured, with the number of drivers breaking the law in this way down by five per cent over the past five years.
