Drivers should take care when travelling during the winter months, even when there is no evidence of snow showers.
The Highways Agency warned that once the mercury dips below zero degrees C, there is an increased risk of ice and severe frost building up on roads.
Jason Glasson, who is part of the Highways Agency's winter team, therefore advised: "It's particularly important you give yourself extra time to prepare for your journey on a cold morning and don't drive off until you and your car are ready."
Furthermore, the Highways Agency was keen to warn that heavy frost can easily cause roads to become slippery.
Drivers should also take note that ice is more prevalent in shaded areas, such as under bridges and on routes shaded by trees.
The UK is preparing for a hazardous cold snap in the days ahead, with the Met Office keeping its cold weather alert at level three, which indicates 'severe' weather conditions.
