Euro NCAP has used its well-regarded ratings system in order to establish its best cars of 2011.
Separated into five different categories of vehicle, a motor can only be selected for the prize if it has received a five-star rating and achieved favourable scores across all four of Euro NCAP's areas of assessment.
Once the vehicles were whittled down, the Audi Q3 was able to take first place in the small off-road 4x4 category, with the Chevrolet Aveo honoured in the supermini group.
The winner of the small MPV category was named as the Mercedes B Class, while the small family and large family groups went to the Ford Focus and the Volvo V60 respectively.
While unable to be crowned a winner, the Ford Ranger was also praised by Euro NCAP for its eye-catching performances.
The only pickup to be tested over the past 12 months, the Ranger was deemed to be the safest vehicle of its kind to ever be tested by the organisation, achieving high ratings across every area of assessment.
Euro NCAP was set up in 1997 and consists of seven European governments and a variety of automotive organisations from every European nation.
