Women & Work - Funding Still Available

The Women and Work initiative is now in its fourth phase and funding is still available to aid career development for women working in the automotive sector.

With less than 20% of the industry’s workforce being female, the sector needs to develop a more diverse workforce which will help to improve the industry as a whole.

To take advantage of the funding, employers need to spend a minimum of £1000 for a funding grant of £400 per participant.

Applicable to women working in England only, Women & Work offers improved staff development, improved performance and improved recruitment and customer service.

For more information on the scheme and how to get involved please contact Emma Lawson on 01992 511521 or emmal@motor.org.uk or visit www.autocity.org.uk

The SkillAuto search for excellence begins

Outstanding automotive technicians who wish to showcase their skills can now put themselves to the test by entering the 2010 SkillAuto competition which is now open.

If you know or employ a technician who has no more than 3 years experience including training and think they are capable of competing to be the best in the UK, encourage them to take the online test.  This year, for the first time technicians from across all three competition streams of AutoTech, AutoBody and AutoPaint can enter online at www.autocity.org.uk/skillauto

Those entering the competition are requested to set up their own profile and via the website; the IMI will keep registrants updated on a wealth of other career related information.

The online test is open until 31 December 2010.

The IMI are also delighted to announce that they have received a nomination for the 'WorldSkills UK Partner of the Year.'  This nomination is only available to 'outstanding' competition partners who have exceeded the requirements of UK Skills quality criteria.  The winner of this award will be announced at the WorldSkills UK Awards Ceremony on 4th November at London's IMAX.

Help find the UK's next Top Technician

The Top Technician competition recognises and rewards technicians who deliver an excellent service to their customers, by keeping up with ever-more complex vehicle technology through training and by joining industry accreditation schemes such as ATA.

The competition has become a highly-respected competition among technicians, the automotive media and increasingly, the general public. Trouble-shooting on modern passenger cars is a highly-skilled and technical job. The tens of thousands of professional technicians who keep millions of motorists safe on the road do a job they should quite rightly be proud of.

Experienced fault-finders are invited to take an online test at www.toptechnician.co.uk before January 7th. The highest-scorers will then be assessed during practical heats at the semi finals in Warwick next February at Delphi's training facility. The final 6 will battle for the title and the £10,000+ prize package at the finals on March 4th at the Honda Institute in Slough.

Motorists are also invited to nominate a technician or their local garage at www.toptechnician.co.uk.

Headlight - Employers Needed!

Headlight is now entering its second year and is the exciting schools project developed by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) in conjunction with specialist teachers through the National Schools Partnership (NSP).

Through Headlight we aim to develop strong relationships between schools and the UK-wide automotive retail network and increase awareness of the exciting opportunities for young people within the sector, giving them an insight into the automotive world.

The resources will help young people understand how a complex business functions, and the attainment of some key curriculum objectives particularly for business and enterprise related courses.

A key aim is to increase the number of young people applying for roles or training within the sector and improve the profile of the overall retail motor industry.

Why We Need You!

In order to contextualise learning for the students we aim to match up each school involved with a local employer who we would ask to do one of two things:

Arrange for someone from your business to visit the school and give a talk, run a workshop or hold a question & answer session where the students involved in the project can find out more about the industry from someone who works in it.

Allow the group of students to visit your business and give them a tour and chance to ask questions about how a business functions.

To register your business or for more information contact the Headlight Team by calling 01992 511521 or email headlight@motor.org.uk

Electric vehicle training programmes charged and ready

Over the past few months the IMI have been working on a High Voltage Electric Vehicles project with the SMMT, together with a number of vehicle manufacturers and specialist organisations providing expertise in this area.

The result of this work will be the development of National Occupational Standards (NOS), new qualifications and a new Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) route for technicians working on High Voltage Electric Vehicles.

The ATA routes for High Voltage Electric Vehicles will be available to the industry from January 2011.

This route developed will allow the individuals to prove their current competence, initially delivered through a small number of assessment centres throughout the UK but this is expected to grow as the vehicle park grows.

Much of the industry training provider network are now preparing for this new technology and providing the industry with the solutions to upskill and prove their competence.

More details will follow towards the end of the year.

Scotland's Skills Strategy Refreshed

A new strategy designed to make it easier for businesses and individuals to access advice and support on skills was launched this month.

The Scottish Government has refreshed the Skills for Scotland Strategy, which aims to simplify the skills system, empower individuals and employers to access help and support more effectively and better meet the needs of the key economic sectors and industries of the future.

Building on the 2007 skills strategy, it takes into account the changed economic climate and the new challenges facing businesses looking to support sustainable employment.

Launching the Strategy in Glasgow, Skills and Lifelong Learning Minister Keith Brown said:
"Our original Skills for Scotland Strategy was published three years ago when economic conditions were very different from those currently faced by individuals and employers across the country.

"This refreshed Strategy makes clear the Scottish Government's commitment to training and skills. It sets out a flexible, responsive, partnership approach to meeting Scotland's skills needs at a crucial point in our economic recovery.”

The strategy reinforces national targets for Skills Development Scotland (SDS) which is already funding more than 40,000 training opportunities this financial year, including up to 20,000 Modern Apprenticeships, 14,500 training places to support the unemployed and 5,000 places through the Flexible Training Opportunities programme. In addition more than 40,000 people are expected to benefit from Individual Learning Accounts this year.

The full strategy document can be downloaded from the Scottish Government website
