IMI welcomes call from Which? for an industry wide qualification for all automotive technicians

In response to this weeks Which? report into garage servicing, The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has had the status raised of its Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) scheme. ATA is the only industry backed, independent accreditation scheme that specifically tests the current competency of technicians in the automotive retail sector.

The report from Which? clearly shows that there is strong consumer support for accredited individuals with over half of those surveyed deeming an individual's commitment to a code of conduct as important when getting their car serviced.  Codes of ethical conduct are integral parts of both the ATA scheme and membership of the IMI. Registered ATA individuals and IMI members have shown a commitment to best practice and continuing professional development, for the good of their customers and the industry as a whole.

Women and Work Programme - Funding Available

The Women and Work project is now up and running through phase 4 and funding is still available!

The programme requires a minimum spend from employers of £1000 in order to access a grant of £400 per participant and offers employees an opportunity for additional support in up-skilling in either Management & Leadership or general Career Development.  Many women have benefitted from the scheme over the past three years including Kim Judd at Thurlby Motors…

Kim achieved a promotion from purchase ledger clerk to acting company accountant when the opportunity arose not long after she had undertaken training partially funded by the Women and Work Scheme.  The funding enabled Kim to complete the AAT Accounting qualification.  Speaking on the benefits of the training that she undertook, Kim says ‘As I’ve progressed at work I have been able to apply the skills that I’ve learnt whilst studying, enabling me to pick up new tasks quickly’.  Kim said that the process was ‘very straightforward’ with support available from both the IMI and her employer.

Since funding support is made available to employers through the Women and Work scheme, employers can develop their employees at an earlier stage than maybe they would usually be able to and Kim encourages other women and their employers to get involved in the women and work scheme: ‘it is a fast and supportive route to develop individual’s roles’.

So, if you think you may have females within your organisation who would benefit from some training, please do get in touch on 01992 511521 and speak to Nicola Hayes or email nicolah@motor.org.uk

Headlight Programme - Automotive employers, we need your help...

Headlight is now entering its second year and is the exciting schools project developed by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) in conjunction with specialist teachers through the National Schools Partnership (NSP) that includes a series of creative curriculum-linked teacher and student resources, with the motor industry as the exciting backdrop. In addition there is a related competition, which combined with the resources are all aimed primarily at those following KS4 business related courses.

Why We Need You!
In order to contextualise learning for the students we aim to match up each school involved with a local employer who we would ask to do one of two things:
1.            Arrange for someone from your business to visit the school and give a talk, run a workshop or hold a question & answer session where the students involved in the project can find out more about the industry from someone who works in it.
2.            Allow the group of students to visit your business and give them a tour and chance to ask questions about how a business functions.

Welsh auto technician wins silver medal in UK skills competition

Twenty two year old Phil Roberts, from Llanrwst, has secured a silver medal in the competition to find the top automotive technicians in the UK.

Phil, who works at Central Garage in Llanrwst, Gwynedd competed against the very best automotive technicians in the Skillauto competition final in the Automobile Technology category, which was held at the BMW Group Academy in Berkshire. Competitors had to demonstrate their diagnostic and repair skills on a variety of vehicles and systems.  Phil's silver medal meant he was also the highest placed technician representing an independent garage.

Candidates for 2011 Skillauto competition are requested to register their interest via the Skillauto website when the competition process opens in September. The competitions encompass light vehicle servicing, as well as vehicle body repair and painting. They are designed to reflect the latest advancements in technology and business requirements, providing candidates with the opportunity to develop their skills further.  Employers are encouraged to put forward those technicians they feel could compete on a national stage and success at Skillauto can inject pride and ambition into your workforce.

Talk to the Motor Industry!

As part of our service to our members, the IMI is committed to helping professionals keep up to date with developments in the industry and to help our member networks. As part of this process our member associations up and down the country hold regular events for our members which give insights into the wider industry.

If you have a product you would like the industry to know about or an area of expertise you would like to shout about, we offer the opportunity for you to talk to our 19000 members around the country. Talks can be on any topic including new products and technological developments, training methods, business management and company profiles.

The IMI will pay any expenses and, as we have associations all over the country, you can choose to give presentations in your locality, or anywhere in the country. Companies giving presentations will also benefit from free marketing, as presentations will be advertised and reviewed in our membership magazine and through our various newsletters, as well as having the opportunity to network with industry professionals at the events.

If your company is interested in taking advantage of this opportunity or you simply wish to get some more information, please contact Simon White at the IMI (simonw@motor.org.uk).
