Drive Forward

- in Motor Industry Skills Training Sept 2008

Welcome to the Motor Industry Skills e-newsletter. We would like to send it to as many people and organisations as possible - if you know anyone who may like to receive it, please ask them to email anns@motor.org.uk with their details.

ATA goes public

The IMI, which regulates the ATA scheme, has launched a campaign to take ATA to the consumer. Sporting the headline, 'You know you're OK with ATA'  the campaign was launched at the British Motor Show at Excel. The ATA scheme recognises technicians who have proved their skills voluntarily to show customers they are professionals who can be relied on.

To help motorists find garages who employ ATA registered technicians, consumers can search on-line at  www.OKwithATA.com

AutoCity - careers IAG tool

The IMI have launched AutoCity, an online careers information tool for the motor industry which provides young people, adults and careers practitioners with valuable information they need about careers in our industry. It includes video case studies, using real people in real jobs, for the different job roles available.

Amongst the information on the site, visitors can find out about qualifications, salary guidelines and read job descriptions, as well as links to Awarding Bodies delivering automotive qualifications.

Headlight - school curriculum project

The IMI are also launching a national schools competition aimed at improving the image of the retail motor industry through supporting the learning of 14-16 year olds. Students will be introduced to the wide variety of job roles across the sector, initially focusing on non-technical roles.

Following a block of learning, students will enter their work into a national competition. These entries will be judged by industry experts and prizes awarded to individual winners and also their school. In addition, participating schools will benefit from being linked to employers in their local area.

14 - 19 Diplomas

Ofqual has now approved the Phase 3 Line of Learning Criteria for the Retail Diploma, which will be a key engagement vehicle for young people into the Automotive Retail sector.

Qualifications development for both the Principle and Assoociated/Specialist Learning will now begin. The aim of the next stage of development is to ensure more young people have the opportunity to benefit from a broad and rich programme of work related learning, enabling them to pursue a wide range of further and high education or employment. The Engineering Diploma has already been developed in a similar way, for which delivery will begin in September by approximately 80 consortia.

A number of Higher Education Institutions including Warwick University have supported the development of Diplomas, strengthening their position as a learning route suitable to learners of all abilities.

The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) is collaborating with a number of workforce partners to develop a package to support those consortia planning to offer Diploma lines from 2010 and beyond. This package will help curriculum planners, line leads and consortia managers as well as practitioners with planning for the implementation of an effective Diploma programme.

Full details will be available at www.diploma-support.com

WorldSkills Wales

Skills competition Wales has been introduced to support and raise the profile of skills competitions within Wales. It will do so by promoting excellence amongst skilled trainees and apprentices across Wales.

High skill levels are vital to the success of the Welsh economy and are a key part of the Welsh Assembly Government's strategy to help businesses to grow, develop and compete profitably.

Competitions are about finding the 'best of the best' and the competitive nature of humankind means that certain talented individuals will always strive to develop their skills in an effort to beat the opposition. Competitions are designed to test individuals against standards for work, now and in the future. For the individual, the rewards can be fantastically self satisfying. For employers, highly adept employees contribute to the success and profitability of the company.

Further information and application forms are available from the Welsh Assembly Government website at www.wales.gov.uk/worldskills
