National Occupational
Standards
The whole range of National Occupational
Standards (NOS), which underpin all vocational qualifications in the
automotive sector, are being revised and the IMI's Skills Development
team is coordinating a consultation process, the first phase closed for
comments at the end of September, but consultation continues until the
end of October. Brand new qualifications will be introduced next year so
the existing Standards are being updated in conjunction with some 20
specialist Expert Working Groups made up of representatives from all
areas of the industry, to ensure they reflect current job roles and take
into account new technology and business practices.
The IMI has launched an on-line consultation process for employers to
give their feedback on the standards via its website. Alternatively, they
can request the relevant documentation direct from the IMI, contact beverleyl@motor.org.uk.

Annual Apprentice reports
An annual benchmark review
has been carried out to identify the number of learners, and success
rates of learners for each automotive framework currently under the
responsibility of the IMI. Where data is available these research
reports highlight the profile of learners and the number of learners
progressing from level 2 to level 3 Apprenticeship frameworks.

ATA Air-Conditioning Route
A new assessment in air-conditioning has been
added to the ATA scheme to provide an opportunity for businesses and
their technicians to comply with new European legislation regarding the
handling of refrigerant gases which comes into force in July 2010.
Three levels applicable to mobile air-conditioning systems (MAC) have
been introduced to ATA: Refrigerant Handler, Service Technician and
Diagnostic Technician. Accreditation in this discipline includes
practical assessments as well as an on-line knowledge test. Technicians
considering ATA accreditation can take a self-assessment on the ATA
web-site, www.automotivetechnician.org.uk

Junior Employability
Event - Cardiff
Over 50 students attended an Employability
Event which was hosted by four sector skills councils at the Cardiff
University Conference Hall in September.
Students took part in a number of activities which highlighted the skills
and qualifications required to work in the high tech automotive industry
of today.
The Automotive Skills division of the IMI were supported by Fordthorne of
Cardiff who kindly provided a selection of vehicles. The students were
able to explore some of the advanced technology features fitted as
standard to many of today's vehicles for safety, comfort and an
improved driving experience.
Each of the groups were required to match the various features of the
different vehicles to potential customer profiles, then, through role
play, they each made their recommendations as to the choice of vehicle to
the customer.

Scottish Modern Apprenticeships Online
This is a Scottish Government web based
programme for registration and certification of Modern Apprentices. The
programme addresses the needs of SSC's, providers and the Enterprise
Networks and will provide a faster turnaround with less bureaucracy as
well as more detailed and accurate information on candidates. IMI staff
are currently undergoing training on the system prior to roll out later
in the year.
For more information please contact Davie Massie davidm@motor.org.uk

SkillMiles
Since the SkillMiles initiative was launched
six months ago by the IMI, more than 30,000 SkillMiles points have been
awarded in reward for activity such as participation on working groups or
loan vehicles or equipment. Together, these points are the equivalent in
value to over £300,000 of support from across the sector.
The IMI's SkillMiles scheme awards points to individuals and businesses
helping to support the Institute's work in raising skill levels,
including financial as well as 'in kind' contributions, such as a
person's time. A tiered points system ensures that contributions are
weighted fairly with four levels of recognition - bronze, silver, gold
and platinum.
Through the scheme, the IMI will also be able to show the Government that
employers and individuals in the automotive retail industry are making
valuable contributions to skills development, which had not been recognised
previously on an industry-wide scale.
