IMI welcomes call from Which? for an industry wide accreditation for all automotive technicians

In response to last week's Which? report into garage servicing, The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has had the status raised of its Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) scheme. ATA is the only industry backed, independent accreditation scheme that specifically tests the current competency of technicians in the automotive retail sector.

The report from Which? clearly shows that there is strong consumer support for accredited individuals with over half of those surveyed deeming an individual's commitment to a code of conduct as important when getting their car serviced.  Codes of ethical conduct are integral parts of both the ATA scheme and membership of the IMI. Registered ATA individuals and IMI members have shown a commitment to best practice and continuing professional development, for the good of their customers and the industry as a whole.

BIS Consultations on Skills for Growth and Future FE Funding Model

As you may already be aware, BIS (the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills) recently launched two major public consultations:

* Skills for Sustainable Growth

* A Simplified Further Education and Skills Funding System

The IMI Sector Skills Council is coordinating a response to both of these important consultations, which will potentially feed in to the Government’s Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR), requiring a response before the deadline of the 14th of October.   We are aiming to hold 2 workshops at the IMI to discuss the consultation documents and specifically the questions raised by BIS within the documents. We are therefore interested to know if you or a member of your staff would be interested in attending either of the following workshops:

Skills for Sustainable Growth: Tuesday 28th September 13.00 – 15.00

A Simplified Funding System:  Wednesday 29th September 13.00 – 15.00

Please note that the Simplified Funding System Consultation is very much more a technical consultation looking at particular funding mechanisms and current barriers than the Skills for Sustainable Growth consultation.

If you cannot attend these workshops but would still like to have your views considered within the Sector Skills Council response, please send your comments and answers to those questions detailed within the consultation feedback form (in part or whole) via e-mail to Beverley Lilley (beverleyl@motor.org.uk).  The consultation documents and feedback forms can be found at:

ALP - Minimum Contract Levels Regional Events

ALP Regional Events – 15 Sept – 13 Oct 2010
The ALP is hosting a series of one day Minimum Contract Levels (MCL) regional events during September and October.  The events will examine the various contracting model arrangements as the Skills Funding Agency develops its commissioning and procurement policy around its minimum threshold contracts for all providers from 1 August 2011, i.e.

*Model A: Subcontracting to Larger Providers and FE Colleges
*Model B: Smaller Provider Consortia Arrangements
*Model C: Managing Agents

The events will be facilitated by ALP with policy input from a senior representative from the Skills Funding Agency. There will be presentations from organisations keen to foster new partnership arrangements. These key players, many of whom are already working with providers in this way, will outline the framework for working through the different brokerage models.

Delegates will have the chance to challenge each model during in-depth round table discussions including the legal implications and intellectual property considerations. The outcomes and contributions from delegates will serve as the basis for ALP’s ongoing policy discussions with the Skills Funding Agency. Delegate costs are: ALP Member £75.00 + VAT and Non-Member £175.00 + VAT, additional non-member delegates from the same organisation at £125.00 + VAT.

Women and Work Programme - Funding Available

The Women and Work project is now in phase 4 and funding is still available!

The programme requires a minimum spend from employers of £1000 in order to access a grant of £400 per participant and offers employees an opportunity for additional support in up-skilling in either Management & Leadership or general Career Development.  Many women have benefitted from the scheme over the past three years including Kim Judd at Thurlby Motors…

Kim achieved a promotion from purchase ledger clerk to acting company accountant when the opportunity arose not long after she had undertaken training partially funded by the Women and Work Scheme.  The funding enabled Kim to complete the AAT Accounting qualification.  Speaking on the benefits of the training that she undertook, Kim says ‘As I’ve progressed at work I have been able to apply the skills that I’ve learnt whilst studying, enabling me to pick up new tasks quickly’.  Kim said that the process was ‘very straightforward’ with support available from both the IMI and her employer.

Kim encourages other women and their employers to get involved in the women and work scheme: ‘it is a fast and supportive route to develop individual’s roles’.

So, if the employers you work with would benefit from this programme, please ask them to get in touch on 01992 511521 and speak to Nicola Hayes or email nicolah@motor.org.uk

Alternatively more information can be found on our website by clicking here.

Talk to the Motor Industry!

As part of the service we offer to our members, the IMI aims to help professionals keep up to date with developments in the industry.  As part of this process our member associations up and down the country hold regular events which give insights into the wider industry.

If you have training provision or an area of expertise you would like the industry to know about we can offer the opportunity for you to talk to our 19000 members around the country. Talks can be on any topic including new technological developments, training methods and innovation in training.

The IMI will pay any expenses and, as we have associations all over the country, you can choose to give presentations in your locality, or anywhere in the country. Companies giving presentations will also benefit from free marketing, as presentations will be advertised and reviewed in our membership magazine and through our various newsletters, as well as having the opportunity to network with industry professionals at the events.

If your organisation is interested in taking advantage of this opportunity or you simply wish to get some more information, please contact Simon White at the IMI (simonw@motor.org.uk).

Headlight

Headlight is an initiative developed by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) in conjunction with specialist teachers through the National Schools Partnership (NSP) that includes a series of free curriculum-linked teacher and student resources, with the motor industry as the exciting backdrop. In addition there is a related competition, combined with resources, aimed primarily at those following KS4 business related courses.

Through this programme pupils will develop their business and enterprise knowledge and gain routes into local employers within the sector that will help them witness theory in practice first hand, and increase their awareness of the exciting career opportunities available to them within the motor industry.

These flexible resources have been developed mainly to comply with selected units from all 6 compulsory GCSE Business Studies modules, although they will also successfully tie in with several topics within the BTEC Level 2 business studies curriculum and equivalent in Scotland.

Areas covered within the resource packs include:
•    Business Operations
•    Business structure & organisation
•    Business Environment
•    Finance
•    Marketing
