Important Update Apprenticeship Framework 5.1
The IMI has today taken the decision to suspend the implementation of the interim Apprenticeship Framework 5.1. This difficult decision was taken after it became clear that even though dual running of National Qualification Framework (NQF) and Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) qualifications had been agreed in principle by the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS), the framework could not be implemented in sufficient time to avoid disadvantaging large numbers of learners. The IMI recognises that some training providers were geared up to deliver the new Framework and will naturally be disappointed that they will be unable to use the new qualifications for their apprentices at this time. The decision to withdraw 5.1 was taken after consultation with NAS, training providers and awarding bodies. Further research suggested that most of the provider network were not planning to deliver QCF qualifications within an apprecticeship framework this year and this represented over 80% of learners in the sector. The earliest expiry date for registering learners on Framework 4 will be 31st December 2010. The IMI intend to use the development work for framework 5.1 to bring forward the implementation of the SASE and SASW compliant frameworks. We will continue to provide progress updates on this. The IMI has reached agreement with two awarding bodies, City & Guilds and IMI Awards Ltd that any learner registered on a QCF qualification, as part of an Apprenticeship programme (and excluding Foundation) can be transferred to the relevant NQF qualifications, free of charge. We are disappointed that we have not been able to reach and satisfy the requests of all parties in this instance, but will continue to work with NAS, training providers and employers to ensure framework development continues. For further information please contact Glenn Cutter, Qualifications and Frameworks Manager email: mailto:glennc@motor.org.uk
Note: This communication supercedes any previous communication about the implementation of Framework 5.1

Latest Research - Workforce Profile 2010
The latest research report outlining the structure of the industry has just been completed. It gives an up-to-date review of all the main statistics across the UK, providing an invaluable insight into the make up of the industry and some of the key emerging issues. Key Findings include:
• Overall the size of the sector has increased over the past decade with the number of business units 5% higher in 2008 compared with 1998 and the number of enterprises up 6% over the same period.
• At the sub-sector level the sale of motor vehicles saw its share of the sector decrease by 2% between 2008 and 2009 while the sales of motor parts and the rental and leasing of vehicles increased their share of all enterprises by 1% each to 15% and 5% respectively.
• On a regional level, in percentage terms, London saw the greatest growth in number of business enterprises between 2008 and 2009, up 4% to 5,800. The North East saw a 3% rise in the number of enterprises in the sector while elsewhere growth was between 1% and 2% between 2008 and 2009. England grew 1.5%, Scotland 1.7%, Northern Ireland 1.5% and Wales 0.5% over the period.
• In 2009 85% of all local business units are micro-businesses (0-9 employees), unchanged from 2008. Although small businesses account for the majority of the sector they account for under a half of all employees at 38%.
• The total number of staff employed within the sector decreased by 9.3% over the last decade, exacerbated by a 5% decrease between 2008 and 2009. There are currently some 505,000 people employed within the sector.
