Apprenticeship Framework Update

Transferable Skills

The IMI has recently taken the decision not to implement an interim framework between the current framework and the new SASE /SASW compliant frameworks, therefore the current framework, framework 4 has been updated to reflect the new English and Welsh requirements for transferable skills from 1st September 2010.  For more details on the changes please click on the following link.

Automotive Apprenticeship Framework Consultation Events and Online Survey

As announced in the special edition of Drive Forward sent out on 14th October 2010, the IMI is currently developing new Automotive Apprenticeship Frameworks which will fall in line with the new requirements from the Specification of Apprenticeship Standards for England (SASE) and Specification of Apprenticeship Standards for Wales (SASW).

The IMI would like to consult with training providers on the new Frameworks in order to give them the chance to have their say and discuss ways in which we could improve the Frameworks.

Some of the areas that we would like to consult on are:

•         Frameworks & Pathways
•         Functional Skills (England) and Essential Skills Wales (Wales)
•         Wider Key Skills
•         Additional employer requirements
•         Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
•         Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)
•         Entry requirements for each framework & pathway
•         On & off the job learning
•         Health & safety – learning providers & employers
•         Progression opportunities
•         Time scale for implementation of Framework 5

The IMI is holding consultation meetings on the English and Welsh Frameworks. There is still a limited amount of spaces left for the following dates:

English Frameworks

•         England (North) – Wednesday 10th November 2010 – 10:30am – 2:30pm – Alton Cars Ltd, Cross Green Approach, Cross Green Industrial Estate, Leeds, LS9 0SG

•         Wales (North) –Thursday 11th November 2010  – 10:30am – 2:30pm - Coleg Llandrillo Cymru, Rhyl, Cefndy Road, Rhyl, LL18 2HG

If you would like to attend either of the above dates please confirm your attendance with Laura Beattie, via email (laurab@motor.org.uk) as soon as possible.

National Occupational Standards Update

The UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) have recently approved the following new/revised suites of National Occupational Standards

•         Caravan & Motorhome Maintenance & Repair

Women & Work - Funding Still Available

The Women and Work initiative is now in its fourth phase and funding is still available to aid career development for women working in the automotive sector.

With less than 20% of the industry’s workforce being female, the sector needs to develop a more diverse workforce which will help to improve the industry as a whole.

To take advantage of the funding, employers need to spend a minimum of £1000 for a funding grant of £400 per participant.  Applicable to women working in England only, Women & Work offers improved staff development, improved performance and improved recruitment and customer service.

For more information on the scheme and how to get involved please contact Emma Lawson on 01992 511521 or emmal@motor.org.uk or visit www.autocity.org.uk/WIMI/

Scotland's Skills Strategy Refreshed

A new strategy designed to make it easier for businesses and individuals to access advice and support on skills was launched this month.

The Scottish Government has refreshed the Skills for Scotland Strategy, which aims to simplify the skills system, empower individuals and employers to access help and support more effectively and better meet the needs of the key economic sectors and industries of the future.

Building on the 2007 skills strategy, it takes into account the changed economic climate and the new challenges facing businesses looking to support sustainable employment.

Launching the Strategy in Glasgow, Skills and Lifelong Learning Minister Keith Brown said:
"Our original Skills for Scotland Strategy was published three years ago when economic conditions were very different from those currently faced by individuals and employers across the country.

"This refreshed Strategy makes clear the Scottish Government's commitment to training and skills. It sets out a flexible, responsive, partnership approach to meeting Scotland's skills needs at a crucial point in our economic recovery.”

The strategy reinforces national targets for Skills Development Scotland (SDS) which is already funding more than 40,000 training opportunities this financial year, including up to 20,000 Modern Apprenticeships, 14,500 training places to support the unemployed and 5,000 places through the Flexible Training Opportunities programme. In addition more than 40,000 people are expected to benefit from Individual Learning Accounts this year.

The full strategy document can be downloaded from the Scottish Government website

Electric vehicle training programmes charged and ready

Over the past few months the IMI have been working on a High Voltage Electric Vehicles project with the SMMT, together with a number of vehicle manufacturers and specialist organisations providing expertise in this area.

The result of this work will be the development of National Occupational Standards (NOS), new qualifications and a new Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) route for technicians working on High Voltage Electric Vehicles.

The ATA routes for High Voltage Electric Vehicles will be available to the industry from January 2011.

This route developed will allow the individuals to prove their current competence, initially delivered through a small number of assessment centres throughout the UK but this is expected to grow as the vehicle park grows.

The training provider network should consider preparing for this new technology and providing the industry with the solutions to upskill and prove their competence.

More details will follow towards the end of the year.

Read the full press release here.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has recently published the Electric Car Guide to help motorists make more informed decisions when purchasing an electric vehicle. Presented in an easy to understand Q&A-style format, the free of charge publication addresses some of the common queries relating to electric vehicles including information about batteries, charging, vehicle performance, on-the-road cost, government incentives and safety.

The SkillAuto search for excellence begins

Outstanding automotive technicians who wish to showcase their skills can now put themselves to the test by entering the 2010 SkillAuto competition.

If you know or teach a technician who has no more than 3 years experience including training and think they are capable of competing to be the best in the UK, encourage them to take the online test.  This year, for the first time technicians from across all three competition streams of AutoTech, AutoBody and AutoPaint can enter online at www.autocity.org.uk/skillauto

Those entering the competition are requested to set up their own profile and via the website; the IMI will keep registrants updated on a wealth of other career related information.

The online test is open until 31 December 2010.

The IMI are also delighted to announce that they have received a nomination for the 'WorldSkills UK Partner of the Year.'  This nomination is only available to 'outstanding' competition partners who have exceeded the requirements of UK Skills quality criteria.  The winner of this award will be announced at the WorldSkills UK Awards Ceremony on 4th November at London's IMAX.

Jaguar Land Rover Announce Sponsorship of Headlight

We are delighted to announce that Jaguar Land Rover are sponsoring the Headlight initiative and have very generously donated a first prize to the project.

The winning team will receive a tour of the Jaguar factory, a Land Rover Heritage tour and a 4x4 off-road experience.

Headlight is the exciting schools project developed by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) in conjunction with specialist teachers through the National Schools Partnership (NSP) that includes a series of creative curriculum-linked teacher and student resources, with the motor industry as the exciting backdrop. In addition there is a related competition, which combined with the resources are all aimed primarily at those following KS4 business related courses.

Through Headlight we aim to develop strong relationships between schools and the UK-wide automotive retail network and increase awareness of the exciting opportunities for young people within the sector, giving them an insight into the automotive world.

A key aim is to increase the number of young people applying for roles or training within the sector and improve the profile of the overall retail motor industry.

Dr. Adrian Birch Phd, Manager of Training Systems and Young People at Jaguar Land Rover Academy said, "There is a very real need to get young people interested in the automotive industry. Too often the sector is not considered because there is little understanding of the varied opportunities that exist and the progression that's possible for young people who choose it as a career. Headlight gives just that; young people are exposed to the awareness and understanding of the industry and the potential opportunities open to them. The success of programmes like this drives home awareness of the sector and potentially increases the interest and recruitment of young people."
