Update on Skills Policy from BIS

Two updates this month on the Governments skills agenda. The first offers an overview of the Skills Strategy. Launched last week by Vince Cable and largely ignored in the media, it contains some important information and is summarised here:

The second is a summary of the Department Business Plans for the world of education, reported on last week but here put into a chronological order for schools and adult learning respectively so as to create a 'what's coming up' guide of future activity, please click here:

QCF Status Update.

The IMI are very pleased to announce that they have completed their initial work for QCF migration in delivering compliant units and rules of combination to awarding organisations.

The IMI have now uploaded and banked 301 new standalone units and 48 Rules of Combination as part of the phase 2 migration plan.

The new unit development coincided with a  change of accreditation system from the, Web Based Accreditation (WBA) , to the new Ofqual system, Regulatory IT System (RITS).

The uploaded units and rules of combination allows awarding organisations to move forward and develop their new qualifications which they are aiming to have completed before the new frameworks become live next year.

In total the IMI have developed and uploaded over 600 QCF units and increased sector coverage by over a third – this includes previously non-catered for sectors such as Heavy Vehicle Trailer and Body Building.

For further information regarding NOS and QCF development please contact Glenn Cutter at the IMI, glennc@motor.org.uk

A Call for Open Day Events

The IMI would like to hear from Training Providers who are planning to hold open days to encourage young people into the sector.  We have developed a Careers Champion scheme and would like to build a portfolio of events that the IMI can support in attracting and engaging young people into the automotive sector.  If you are planning to host an event and would like to IMI to support this by attending and promoting the sector, please contact Nicola Hayes on nicolah@motor.org.uk or call 01992 511521.

Businesses urged to take advantage of funding!

Can you encourage the employers you work with to take advantage of  valuable funding from the Women and Work Sector Paths Initiative to help with training opportunities?

The funding initiative is available for women in England going through career development training courses between now and February 2011. Employers need to spend a minimum of £1000* for a funding grant of £400 per participant. Whilst that might sound onerous in today’s economy, you can offset any cost associated with the training, including down-time for an employee, travel costs and the cost of training itself.

For more information about the Women and Work scheme and how to get involved, please contact Emma Lawson on 01992 511521 or emmal@motor.org.uk.

Lifestyle Europe supports AMA

A keen supporter of Automotive Management Accreditation (AMA) is the Lifestyle Europe Group, with dealerships in Kent, Surrey and Sussex. The first managers from the group to successfully undergo assessment were Mark Higgins and Adrian Cook who, along with Lifestyle chairman Marc Matthew, visited Fanshaws to receive their certificates from IMI Executive Chair Sarah Sillars OBE.

Adrian said:“What I liked about the assessment was its relevance to my job. While I was initially nervous, the assessor  talked me through the process so I was at ease.”

Marc Matthew said: “Lifestyle Europe fully supports AMA as an innovative way to meet the managerial needs of our sector. By measuring competence and signposting development needs, it’s of benefit both to individuals and their employers.”

Full details of the AMA scheme are available online at www.automotivemanagement.org.uk

First in Ireland

Brian Moylan MIMI, Proprietor of Hanover Accident Repair Centre in Portadown, is the first person in a NI bodyshop to successfully achieve ATA within the Vehicle Damage Assessor (VDA) route.

This means Brian (pictured) has proven his current competence as an Assessor and signed up to the ethical code of practice.  Brian said ‘It’s been tough, but ATA brings more professionalism into the body repair business.  On a modern car it’s important to ensure the safety features are repaired properly after an accident, lives could be at risk’.

Brian has generously offered to give hints and tips to other ATA VDA candidates get through the accreditation.  Having ATA reconised staff is an important step to motor businesses in achieving the British Standard Kitemark which gives customers reassurance of high standards of workmanship.
