Motherwell College is the first in Scotland to be approved to offer the new Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) for Electric/Hybrid Vehicles. Following investment in vehicles, equipment, learning materials and staff training the first trainee successfully completing the assessment in June 2011.

As well as ATA, the College is also approved to offer the new Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) Electric/Hybrid vocational qualifications, including:

· Level 1 Award in Electrical Vehicle Awareness

· Level 2 Award in Electrically Propelled Vehicle Hazard Management

· Level 2 Award in Routine Maintenance Activities on Electrically Propelled Vehicles.

With the Level 3 Award in Electrically Propelled Vehicle Repair and Replacement expected to be approved shortly.

ATA Accreditation for technicians working with Electric/Hybrid vehicles is available immediately with the rest of this sector leading portfolio available from September 2011.

The aim of these new electric/hybrid vehicle IMI Awards is to provide technicians from the retail automotive industry and public service sector with a unique hands-on opportunity to learn the latest service and repair procedures and techniques for these increasingly complex vehicle systems.

The qualifications have been developed by IMI Awards in conjunction with electric vehicle manufacturers, component suppliers and the Sector Skills Council.  They are the first of their kind to address electric vehicle (high voltage) technology.  The increase in availability of hybrid cars through the introduction of new models from almost every motor manufacturer means these Awards are essential to ensure the health and safety of individuals working with electric and hybrid vehicles.

Hugh Logan, Principal and Chief Executive of Motherwell College said:

"We are delighted to be supporting the automotive industry by offering these courses.  Motherwell College has a long standing commitment to environmental sustainability and this initiative helps meet our overall commitment to engage in modern green sustainable energy."
